Landon was due December 24th. We went to my 40 week doctor appointment on the 21st and he was going to check my cervix because he wanted to induce me, if I had made any progress. (My previous checks I wasn't dilated at all.) Sadly, I hadnt. So he told me to just enjoy the holidays and if I go into labor, that's great. If not, he wanted me to go get a non stress test and an AFI (Aminotic fluid index) to make sure Landon was still doing well and that he had enough fluid. Monday the 27th, we headed to the hospital to get the tests done & Landon passed with flying colors. Since the test went well, our doctor wanted us to come back the next day to check my cervix & go over some options.
Tuesday morning (the 28th) came and we headed to the doctor. He checked me and he got me dilated to a 1 1/2. He said my cervix was still pretty high and I wasn't really progressing on my own. He was worried about Landon because he was over due and technically my due date was December 17th (with the date of my last period). According to that due date, I was over 41 weeks. So, he gave us the option of going to the hospital that evening and they would insert a cervical ripening agent to hopefully help my cervix soften and dilate. Option #2: he said we could wait until Thursday and he would just induce me.
Josh and I decided it was best to go that evening and try the ripening agent praying that it would put me into labor.
So, at 5pm we headed for the hospital! We got settled and had family come over to hang out and bring us food :) We spent the night but I guess you can stay neither of us really slept. Either I had to go to the bathroom & needed Joshs help with all the monitors I was hooked up to or I just couldn't get comfortable. I was having pretty bad back pain, which I came to realize were contractions! Around 4:30am, I was in labor. My contractions were every 2-3 minutes and they were getting more and more intense. At 6am they took out the ripening agent & I asked for my epidural. It was HEAVEN :) While the nurse took out the ripening agent, she checked my cervix. I was only dilated to a 2. I was pretty frustrated because I was having all these contractions and I felt like they were doing NOTHING.
Wednesday morning (the 29th) they checked me about every hour to every 2 hours. By noon I was only dilated to a 3. My doctor came in and broke my water. He was hoping that would help move things along. I wasn't progressing at all. Landon started having some problems. After every contraction, his heart rate would "decel" (I think thats how you spell it.) The nurse explained to me that everytime I would contract, he would feel like he needs to catch his breath. He felt that way after a contraction as well, and that is where they were concerned.
Can I just say I have the best OB/GYN? He really made me feel like this was my experience and wanted me to be able to call the shots. He knew I really wanted to deliver vaginally so he didn't bring up a C-section, until he felt like it was probably the best option. He came back to check me around 4pm and I was only dilated to a 5 or a 6. Landon kept having these "decels" and it was starting to concern my doctor to the point where he brought up a C-section. He explained the risks of these decels if I was in labor much longer. He said it would cause brain damage and other issues that we could avoid. I had Josh give me a blessing because I was so worried. I was scared I was going to have problems and honestly, I was scared to death for a C-section! Doctor wanted to monitor Landon for another hour to see if SOMETHING would change. By 5:30 nothing had happened and he came in to talk with me. After many tears, I told him we need to go ahead and get Landon out. He wasn't doing well and I didn't want to stress him out anymore.
By 6pm I was all prepped and ready for the O.R. Josh put on his "daddy suit" and they wheeled me into the O.R. A few minutes later, Josh came in and before I knew it, I heard a baby crying! The first thing Josh said to me was, "Oh my gosh, he is beautiful! He has a full head of hair!"
It was so surreal to see him. Landon James Kundis was born on December 29, 2010 at 6:37pm.
It was such a crazy/exhausting day but the out come was worth it. He is such a good baby, and he is the most beautiful baby I have ever seen.
He weighed 6 pounds 15 ounces & 19.5 inches. You know what is really crazy? That is EXACTLY how much I weighed & my length when I was born!
